AA|FAB is a research initiative led by curators Alan Dempsey and Kristine Mun at the Architectural Association. Through an annual awards programme the initiative facilitates novel research into the emerging application of digital design and fabrication processes. It further recognises completed work, which makes a contribution to the field of research and future architectural production and practice.
The exhibition presents the research work supported by the cluster over the last two years. Eight award winning projects are presented through drawings, images, models and full scale prototypes. A further 24 built projects from around the world submitted to the Awards programme places this work in a wider context of contemporary architectural innovation.
Taken together, the work in the exhibition explores the changing use of the computer in architectural practice as a means to create a closer integration between design and fabrication, and a more intensive collaboration between architect, design team and clients. In doing so, the show questions the existing role of the architect and speculates on future definitions of the discipline.
