Clara Cappagli and Armand Bultheel’s first tracks were written for their Parisian art school’s librarian. Signalling the start of their collaboration, Agar Agar posted first single ‘Prettiest Virgin’ to Soundcloud in April. Their 2016 EP ‘Cardan’, much rougher than the aforementioned single, mixes Clara’s silky, roaring voice with Armand’s 90’s keyboards and drum machines. Hammering with acid basses, the tandem brings us to an early warp sound between Daniel Maloso, Black Devil Disco and Ariel Pink.
A journey into the fantasy of America, ‘Cardan’ also ventures into a world of synthesis, where nothing is clear, all orientation scrambled. Influenced as much by pop as they are by techno, Agar Agar is simultaneously nonchalant and elegant. This is is sincere music, radical without compromise.
