Artist & Event Info

From the spine-tingling to the truly unsettling, Bartók’s beautiful one-act opera contrasts the intimacy of just two singers with one of the richest orchestrations in the repertoire. A tale of mystery, obsession, murder and infatuation, plus a disturbing dose of contemporary resonance, staged site-specific for the Village Underground.

Internationally renowned vocalists Janice Watson and Andrew Greenan with acclaimed conductor Orlando Jopling and the Royal Orchestral Society.

Royal Orchestral Society
Conductor: Orlando Jopling
Soloists: Janice Watson (soprano), Andrew Greenan (bass)

THERE WILL BE TWO PERFORMANCES, ONE AT 3PM AND THEN A SECOND AT 6PM

Upon entering Bluebeard’s Castle and professing her love, Judith, Bluebeard’s new wife asks to see behind the seven doors inside, each one containing a part of his story. In her quest to remove the shadows from the secrets of his past so their love can grow, she learns too much, to a tragic end.

The incandescent Janice Watson, a Grammy Award-winning soprano who has performed with many of the major opera houses, will sing the role of Judith. The baritone, Andrew Greenan, will be performing the role of Bluebeard. Greenan made his operatic debut at La Scala and has since travelled the world singing many of the great roles in the world’s best opera houses.

Join the Royal Orchestral Society, under the masterful direction of Orlando Jopling, for an afternoon of thrilling music and mystery as we explore the dark and tragic tale of Bluebeard’s Castle.
