The Featherstonehaughs present EDITS

Choreography by Lea Anderson

Edits is the highly anticipated new work by Lea Anderson for her six strong, all male dance company The Featherstonehaughs, the first since the acclaimed The Featherstonehaughs Draw on the Sketchbooks of Egon Schiele twelve years ago.

Using a drastic and compelling new way of creating movement material, Lea Anderson takes to extremes her translation of the conventions of film, photography and painting into dance.

EDITS draws on the peculiar elasticity of filmic time, the dramatic rhythm of film editing, the ability to heighten effect through extreme close up and while revealing the hidden rhythm achieved in film with the use of zooms, pans and tilts, creates a totally original live world of its own.

Featuring costumes by three time Oscar Winner Sandy Powell and an original score played live, EDITS is the perfect continuation of The Featherstonehaughs’ venture into new dance territory.

The Featherstonehaughs (and all female co-company The Cholmondeleys) have been working under the highly original directorship of Lea Anderson, one of the most important figures in British contemporary dance, for over 25 years. They have performed her groundbreaking and distinctive choreography all over the world and past works include Dancing On Your Grave, Flesh and Blood, Double Take and Featherstonehaughs Go Las Vegas. Challenging and exciting, visually stunning and often featuring unique music, the next Lea Anderson work is always an eagerly anticipated event.

"For Edits we studied various feature films from the 40’s, 60’s and 70’s. I was interested in the effects of attempting a literal translation of the conventions of film into live action, which of course is impossible. I became especially interested in viewing ‘takes’ as a series of tiny dances, stripped of “narrative” and dialogue, and yet still imbued with an intensity that comes from the dancers envisioning themselves in a film. These ‘takes’ are separated by ‘edits’, the immediacy of which we have attempted to emulate, adding another layer of drama and interaction between the dancers." Lea Anderson

London performances of Edits are commissioned and presented by The Place.
