HAVANA RUM

Plante Notion
4.03.09

This March sees the return of Havana Club’s 100 Pieces initiative, in which artists from around the globe gather in a room to create art inspired by Havana Club and the heritage and culture of Cuba. Man, it would be cool to be in Cuba. People don’t complain about anything in Cuba, they just drive those funky cars, smoke cigars and drink rum all day.

This time round the artists – some recognisable from previous events, some new – will go head to head in a 100 minute art battle at East London’s Village Underground on 4th March. The teams will create their very own, truly unique Cuban interpretations on a HUGE white wall, armed only with coloured acrylics and Edding pens. PlanetNotion attended last year’s gallery, which was pretty god-darn impressive, but this sounds friggin’ epic.

Furthermore, the pieces will be created without the aid of sketches or pencils; totally freestyle and live before crowds of attendees. New to the event are Monorex, the crew behind renowned live art battles, Secret Wars. Representatives of Secret Wars and attendees at the event will have the final vote on the winning team, decided using a decibel reader. Mental stuff.

Jo Spencer, Head of Marketing for Havana Club, commented: “Havana Club embodies the true spirit and passion of the Cuban people and their country. We are delighted to be collaborating with such a cutting edge collective. It truly brings to life the passion of Contemporary Cuba to a London audience.” Indeed.
