Artist David Michalek’s magnificent moving-image installation Slow Dancing comes to Village Underground as part of The T-Mobile Big Dance.
-
Slow Dancing is a series of larger-than-life, hyper-slow motion video portraits running on a 3 hour loop. 50 dancers and choreographers from around the world were individually shot on a specially constructed set using a high-speed, high-definition camera recording at 1,000 frames per second. Each short movement phrase is played back in approximately 10 minutes of extreme slow motion, which enables the viewer to share privileged information about the complexity of the simplest gestures, catching details that would normally escape the naked eye.
-
The list of participants in this unique installation reads like a who's who of dance talent, including ballerina Wendy Whelan, classical Indian dancer Shantala Shivalingappa, choreographers William Forsythe, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui and Alexei Ratmansky and dancer Judith Jamison (also Artistic Director of Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater).

On Saturday 17 July, join us from 8pm for a special night of ambient music to accompany this extraordinary film, with sets by Southbank Artist in Residence Oliver Coates and expressive, electroacoustic music by Samoyed.
