Kinetic, earth-revering and with famously electrifying live performances, Sons of Kemet features four of the UK jazz scene’s brightest stars, culminating in a revolutionary mix of music that spans jazz, rock, dub and Caribbean folk.
Led by saxophonist, clarinettist, composer and ‘BBC New Generation Artist’ Shabaka Hutchings, Sons of Kemet counts Theon Cross on tuba and both Seb Rochford (Polar Bear, Babyshambles) and Tom Skinner (Melt Yourself Down, Mulatu Astatke) on drums. Hypnotic double drum rhythms frame the colourful interplay of saxophone, clarinet and tuba as the original compositions are brought to life by four fiercely creative musicians.
“There’s the burble, shriek and honk of Shabaka Hutchings’ sax, underlined with dark smudgy sounds from Theon Cross on tuba, and two very different drummers; the clouting, funky, polyrhythmic presence of Seb Rochford contrasts brilliantly with lighter ticking and hissing percussive work on cymbals by Tom Skinner,” Jon Lusk for Village Underground.
Sons of Kemet will be supported by Throwing Shade. Drawing in iridescent strains of popular music – from African and Asian modes, to the grime-y axis of London’s contemporary sound narrative – Throwing Shade creates a diverse and abstract sound patchwork.
An unmissable event for jazz lovers of all stripes.
