If we could offer one piece of advice for the future, Jamila Woods would be it.
Hailing from the fertile ground of Chicago’s alternative rap and R&B scene that Chance The Rapper and Vic Mensa also call home, Jamila has largely flown under the radar, until now. You may have heard her debut album, HEAVN, mentioned in the same breath as Beyoncé’s Lemonade, or maybe you’ve come across the ear-worm delights of single LSD, on which Chance features. At any rate, it’s high time Jamila took up some serious real estate on your playlist.
Joining her for her show here on Tuesday 27th February is Poppy Ajudha. Comparisons to Amy Winehouse are easy – Poppy’s voice goes further than that, positioned unmistakably in the south London territories bringing us so many talented voices at the moment, but with a musicality that calls back to Sarah Vaughan and Dinah Washington.
If you can draw parallels between Chicago and south London’s creative scenes, you’ll find Poppy at a similar position as Jamila: both remarkably talented and poised for headline festival shows and ‘the ones to watch that got away’ – make sure you’re here on Tuesday.
Poppy features on Spotify’s Jazz UK playlist, featuring alongside Ezra Collective, Henry Wu and Shabaka Hutchings, listen up here.
