Hailed by Gilles Peterson as “incredible”, Theon Cross and his swaggering Tuba Bass is one of the stand-out acts of London’s flourishing young jazz scene.
Based in London, Cross holds his own as an impeccable talent, having worked widely across the generic spectrum with musicians including Jon Batiste, Emeli Sande and Kano. Perhaps most well known as part of the award-winning four-piece Sons of Kemet, Cross draws from these energetic and game-changing performances in all his work, composing and playing the tuba with an effervescent inventiveness which distinguishes him as a truly remarkable musician.
At VU, Cross and his band will get the dance floor heaving to syncopated blasts of brass, intricate drum patterns, and occasional astounding scraps of Tuba beat-boxing. This is Jazz like never before. Prepare to bear witness to the evolution of a genre.
