In 2014, Village Underground joined Liveurope, an EU-funded initiative supporting iconic music venues all over the continent to promote up-and-coming European artists.
Liveurope provides support in the form of a financial bonus to the member venues proportionally to their booking of emerging, non-national, European acts. The function of this mechanism is to give established concert venues the opportunity to programme emerging artists every year.
Village Underground was the only UK member of Liveurope alongside peers across the continent including Ancienne Belgique in Brussels, Melkweg in Amsterdam, VEGA in Copenhagen, and many more; over the past few years, participating venues have been given free rein within a blueprint of criteria given by Liveurope to book European acts of our choice.
Hinds, Iceage, Flavien Berger, Mind Against, Charlotte Dos Santos, Kojaque and Pom Poko were among the 137 artists that played at Village Underground with Liveurope’s support – they came from 30+ countries.
While the pandemic meant that we couldn’t book as many Liveurope acts as we had hoped, we still wanted to introduce our audiences to 11 of our favourite new artists from the continent as we depart our full membership to the initiative due to the exit of the UK from the EU, and to take the opportunity to thank Liveurope for developing such a great initiative that encourages further diversity in programming (and for keeping us on as an honorary member!).
